Σtella (Stella Chronopoulou) - The Break. 2020 Greece

This is a very interesting album. I'm not going to be able to describe it properly, as it falls somewhere within the "90's and beyond" genres where I have no foundation. I found this summary from Paste Magazine about her previous album "occupied intriguing, idiosyncratic realms that combined the seemingly incompatible strands of disco basslines, equally dream-pop and arena-ready guitar lines and Stella Chronopoulou’s soulful, tender warble." It kind of gives you an idea of The Break as well. I found it to be a very pleasant listen, with elements of turn of the century chill out, soft female vocals, and well written melodies. Excellent instrumentation - just has a very welcoming sound. Sophisticated even. You can hear this album online. I'm intrigued enough to want to hear more, so I'll keep it.

Ownership: LP: 2020 Arbutus (Canada). Single sleeve with lyrics on the back cover. The only reason I own this is because I got it for a quarter, as part of that local buy we've been talking about. I think this is the first "modern" album I've actually kept from that find. There's still about 6 more to go. But most of them are far from my tastes. This one, however, has growth potential.

  1. Well... I happen to know her. Truely an intelligent songwriter that does not dare to trespass the obvious. I haven't listen to this one but her first two she did for Inner Ear records are to my ears hipster music. You know, that kind with loungey melodic electronics, soft new wave touches gone shoegaze, dreamy Siouxsie Sioux influenced vocals and a soft production in order to result on a harmless chilled-out approach that does not annoy anybody.

I will agree about the excellency of the instrumentation. The players that are backing her and arranging almost everything, are the members of the neokraut band Baby Guru; very experienced in that approach. Their first two albums were an interesting venture into a tribal Can-Suicide-early Doors hybrid that worked for the most times and are a recommended listen. Unfortunately they went the hipster lounge/pop downhill on their 3rd effort, never to resurface again.

I was puzzled to see Σtella, here...

    1. Happy New Year Spyros! Thanks for the detailed comments. I had a feeling you might know more about this, and good to know about the supporting band. As far as adding here - yea I'm just adding everything I keep. The UMR is mostly dedicated to detailing my personal collection. I did enjoy this album, though I'm sure there are better ones in the genre. But it was 25 cents, and it's already here, so why not keep it? :-)

    2. Of course for 25c. is a keeper. Didn't know she had a 3rd album around. She comes from the 90s indie/pop underground as a vocalist for the band My Wet Calvin and is good on what she does. But very pop to my ears. On a similar style (quite popular in urban Greece) with an added willingness for experimentation, I am recommending Vassilina. Her "Fragments" LP is very captivating.
