Savage Steel ~ Canada ~ Toronto, Ontario
Yet another late 80s technical thrash band I was unfamiliar with. I'm beginning to wonder if I was there at all, with so many of these under the radar thrash bands cropping up in my world, some 30+ years after the fact. Savage Steel were a Toronto based group who released 2 albums before disappearing. As I sat down and prepared myself for the onslaught to commence, the first notes were a shock to the system. This didn't have the production values associated with 1988, but rather it sounded like a crude demo from 1982! Somewhat surprising given that this was released on a relatively large label (Frank Marino was one of their label mates). But once the ears adjusted, the music flowed perfectly from there. Everyone complains about the vocals, but to me that's the same thing as complaining about Italian prog rock vocals. The high pitched shrieks were "of the era" and "of the genre". Certainly more appealing than Sieges Even's original vocalist, and I enjoy his as well. It goes with the music. There's some great riffage on Do or Die, and the tracks go all over the place, per protocol. There are no surprises here or epic moments, but it's all solid fare with no weak spots either. Not the place to start if getting your feet wet in prog thrash, but definitely a good late inning pinch hitter.Ownership: 1988 Maze (LP). Acquired in 20221/13/22 (review / new entry)
