Hurdy Gurdy is guitarist Claude Bohling's group before joining Secret Oyster. Their sole album is legendary in collecting circles, and it's easy to see why given the sheer amount of invention within the tight confines of a guitar trio. About half the album is straight up hard rock / blues, and the other half puts on their creative hat and flies to the cosmos. In this way, Hurdy Gurdy reminds me of The Human Beast or Clear Blue Sky. Some superb soloing from Bohling throughout.
Ownership: CD: 2002 Karma. Simple jewel case with lyric booklet. Features three excellent bonus tracks, very relevant to the album proper. Karma is usually very thorough with their historical research, but unfortunately there's none to be found here. Recent online acquisition (2023).
Hurdy Gurdy is one of those albums that I keep saying I'm going to buy, and never do. Finally I plunked down for the Shadoks LP, only to find out from the vendor they didn't have it anymore. At that exact moment, the Karma CD became available at a fair price. I'd been holding out for this version anyway considering the bonus tracks.
