The Next Morning (1971)
The Next Morning are often compared to Jimi Hendrix, though they are much more hard rock influenced than psychedelic I'd submit. Now it could be said that Hendrix himself was moving in this direction, but I hear The Next Morning more in line with other early 70s American hard rock outfits. Heavy guitar, fuzz bass, and Hammond organ define their sound. I think given their unique Caribbean background, they had a different perspective than other groups of their ilk. You can even hear fellow Brooklyn Caribbean musicians Mandrill in their sound, minus the funk angle. Supposedly Columbia was interested in signing them, but I hear The Next Morning as a bit too primitive and amateurish for a major. They did ultimately sign with Calla, a subsidiary of Roulette. Not surprisingly, the album didn't sell all that well, hence its rarity today.
Though The Next Morning was founded by two immigrants from Trinidad, both were settled in Brooklyn and formed the band there. So they're really an American group.
