Herbie Hancock's 3rd Mwandishi album is a bold statement of just how far he was willing to experiment. Even Miles Davis stayed closer to the groove. Sextant, especially on 'Hornets', takes what these guys were doing to the next level. And I do love the mellotron in this setting. Just as I would say for Can's Tago Mago, there's a limit of admiration juxtaposed against enjoyment. This is not an easy listen, nor was it meant to be. In today's world, these traits are rewarded with higher than normal ratings, and a chorus of expletives talking about how awesome it is. I too find myself rooting for music such as this, but I still want some songwriting and melody blended in. All that to say it's mandatory listening for the progressive minded listener. Keeper, yes. Best of the best? Not in my book.
Ownership: LP: 1973 Columbia. Single sleeve with the iconic cover. Half price of going rates from a local antique mall (2022) Very nice copy too.
