Hyjinx (1982)
Wow! Wasn't this a pleasant surprise? Hyjinx weren't your garden variety early 80s hard rock band. This is more in line with albums like Message (NM), Legend (CT), second album Granmax, and UHF. The opening two tracks are energetic with fast guitar solos, leading one to believe there's some Van Halen influence. A3 is a full blown proggy hard rock number complete with Taurus Pedals and keyboards. The vocalist is female, and yea, you will definitely be thinking classic Rush here. Long spaces are allocated to psychedelic styled guitar solos over the rhythm section.
Side 2 is slightly off the pace though still excellent. 'Greensleeves' is not a hard rock rendition of the traditional song, fortunately. Though a curious title for sure. B3 has riffing very similar to late 70s Judas Priest. Maggie Fagan's vocals are confident and powerful. She clearly could have been a headliner. The album closer is another nod to progressive rock. Starting in acoustic ballad mode, the music shifts to hard rock with some spiritual guitar soloing.
Too bad these are the only recordings the band released, that we know of anyway. They had real talent.
