Rahmann (1980)

What do you get when you mix Algerian Arabian music with Mahavishnu Orchestra styled high energy fusion and Zeuhl structures? Rahmann. There is simply no other album like it. One of a kind.

Another album in my collection that I have a long history with, but haven't documented it much, beyond those brief notes some 12+ years ago. Though I could be tempted to leave my review with those notes, as there really isn't that much more to say. A Middle Eastern Magma I suppose, minus the Kobaian language. Album peaks on the fiery 9:38 'Leila'. Borderline where it belongs in the collection, though I'll leave in progressive rock versus jazz fusion, though an argument could be made either way.
According to the liner notes in Musea's booklet, the release date was January 1980, though it was recorded in 1977 and remixed in 1978. The Discogs date of 1979 is incorrect.
The Musea CD adds in four bonus tracks, also recorded in 1977. These total 27 minutes, but are essentially variations of the tracks that appeared on album (and not quite as dynamic). Only 'Danse Sacree' is extended (by four minutes) though it isn't necessarily that much different than what was released, just rawer.
A few interesting facts: Chrissie Hynde, founder of The Pretenders, was once a member of Rahmann. Further on, Al Di Meola reportedly taped an entire live show of Rahmann in 1976 that has yet to surface. Guitarist and band leader Mahamad Hadi later played with Nico. There's also a jazz album with Hadi and John McLaughlin on bass that has yet to see the light of day.
