Haikara's debut is an intense work, almost a Finnish version of Van der Graaf Generator. From a strictly academic perspective, Haikara scores top marks. But to be honest, the music isn't very memorable, and I always struggle to put a few words together about it. In fact it's been a week since I last heard it and yet its contents escape me for the most part. No question it's an essential addition to any Nordic prog rock collection. Perhaps over time the compositions will penetrate. Though in 22 years of owning it, that has yet to happen. I think it would require multiple listening attempts, preferably back to back to back.
Ownership: CD: 1998 Fazer. A straightforward, but otherwise fine reissue. It's going to have to do, as the original is unattainable. Strangely enough, I'm not a fan of the fantasy cover. Typically I enjoy covers such as these, but this one is somewhat creepy to me. In a bad way. Picked up this CD online new when first released.
